The dj world has changed so much in the 40 years, it is hard to think about how we all learned how to do our mix & play to a crowd. Time to talk about my roots & ideas I had when I started. Most dj’s see the dj in the booth with all the girls around them & everybody hi fiving them. They think the dj is the MAN! Well they did not get that over night. They practice & worked hard to understand the whole idea. So what was the whole idea. In my mind it was the party. Get everyone rockin out, make sure the dance floor was full from beginning to end. Tons of happy partiers getting there groove on.
This is what I need to do. 1. Get equipment & start practicing with music I knew well. 2. Make mix tapes to listen to how I was mixing & think about what I could do better. 3. Start to get other people to hear what I sound like from either letting me dj their parties & have them listen to my tapes. 4. Go to as many clubs, dances & events where dj’s are & listen to their mix. After all that ask yourself this simple question: Is this something you really want to do & what kind of dj do you want to be.
After you answer those questions & live the dream for a while you will either be the Man or at least someone that loves the idea. Take your time as you can make money you just have to have a plan to get there.
